Curriculum:
Our school follows the Finnish national curriculum. This means that there is a direct connection between our school and regular Finnish upper level schools if your child would decide to continue their education in Finnish. Children in our school are also required to follow Finnish lessons. We provide regular lessons for native Finnish speakers as well as Finnish as a second language. There is also support for other native languages. For example children in our school have in addition to English and Finnish also been studying their native Chinese, Hindu or Arabic.
Teaching Methods:
Although every teacher has his or her own teaching style there are certain teaching principles that we value at Postipuu School. We aim to do a lot of cross-curricular teaching. This means that we try to integrate different subjects into themes and projects. By doing so it is possible to give children a sense how the knowledge and skills they acquire are of practical use and that subjects are indeed connected. Being a multicultural school we also try to include the many cultures and backgrounds in our teaching. Another important feature of our English department is that we aim to give a lot of responsibility to the children. Instead of maintaining a very hierarchical system in which children simply do as they are told, we aim to include them as active participants in the daily running of the class environment.
Teaching Materials:
Following the Finnish national Curriculum in English is not always easy. We use a wide variety of English text books to cover the different levels and subjects. If your child has been studying in an English speaking school before some of these will sound familiar:
-Oxford Reading Tree
-Abacus Math
-Oxford Framework Maths
-Addison-Wesley mathematics
-Oxford Framework Science
-Oxford spelling Kit
-Oxford Grammar Succes
-Folens 'Once a week' spelling tests
-Laskutaito in English
And so on…..
